Opposition says public service wages out of control

The South Australian Opposition claims the Government will not introduce a cap on public servants’ pay rises.

Labor state treasurers are reportedly discussing ways to keep pay rises within inflation to prevent budget blow-outs and to avoid states outbidding each other for staff.

South Australia’s wages bill is projected to rise by 4.5 per cent this financial year.

Opposition treasury spokesman Rob Lucas says he expects the bill to jump by more than that and he claims the Government cannot keep control of public service wages.

“There’s a lot of talk and very little action from Labor treasurers and the reality is Labor treasurers have a very poor record in terms of financial management, but also in terms of standing up to union leaders, in terms of the enterprise bargaining negotiations,” he said.

Treasurer Kevin Foley is overseas and unavailable for comment.
