U.S. could nominate new World Bank head this week

A new U.S. nominee to replace Paul Wolfowitz as World Bank president could come this week, a White House spokesperson said Tuesday.

“I think we’re getting pretty close,” Tony Snow said.

Wolfowitz will leave office on June 30. He resigned amid mounting pressure following the May 14 release of a report from a special bank panel that found he broke the institution’s rules when he arranged a pay raise for his girlfriend, Shaha Riza.

The president of the World Bank is traditionally a U.S. appointee.

Names being mentioned as possible successors to Wolfowitz include former U.S. deputy secretary of state Robert Zoelick. He is currently with Goldman Sachs and used to be the chief U.S. trade representative.

Other possible candidates include Robert Kimmitt, a senior Treasury Department official who is also a former ambassador to Germany. With files from the Associated Press
