WA expects federal support for mound aquifer recharge project
Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter says he is expecting the Federal Government to announce its financial support for the Gnangara mound aquifer recharge project very soon.
The Premier emerged from a meeting with state and territory leaders and the Prime Minister yesterday, saying he had also secured a guarantee the Commonwealth would not move to take control of the state’s water resources under John Howard’s $10 billion water plan.
Mr Carpenter says WA is asking the Commonwealth to fund water projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
“The Gnangara mound aquifer recharge recycling project which would be an Australia first project could be anything between $15 [million] and $30 million,” he said.
“I would anticipate we’re going to get an announcement on that very soon based on the discussions I’ve had.”
